Challenge
The Texas State University System was deeded 9,500 acres of land in a remote desert mountain range of southwest Texas. The System, which manages seven public universities, envisioned a research/academic facility with overnight accommodations, to provide new and exciting learning opportunities for students and faculty in biology, geology, archeology and other related fields of environmental study.
Solution
The new Field Research Station is situated on a ridgetop site at 3,900 FT elevation overlooking the mountains of Big Bend National Park. The main academic/research and student space contains a bunk room, living/dining area, and a classroom/lab space, with associated support spaces. The dignitary quarters building features four connected guest cabins, each with a private patio. The buildings are thoughtfully placed on the site with views toward the surrounding mountain landscape. Outdoor terraces and communal gathering areas are strategically arranged to promote interaction and a strong sense of place.
